Last night, Will found a dead baby squirrel (drowned) below one of our downspouts. When he went to dispose of it, he saw there was another baby, this one alive. We googled how to care for him and emailed a rehab group, who put us in touch with a licensed squirrel rehabber here in PO. We kept him warm all night and gave him Gatorade. His eyes and ears are not yet open. Attempts to reunite him with his mom were nearly successful (squirrels will try to take back their babies), but Mom started to rebuild her nest for the baby back in our downspout. Meanwhile, baby was getting sun in his box and got overheated and dehydrated. After one hour, he was no longer moving and we had to retrieve him. He was very limp, but we eventually got him rehydrated and he peed and pooped. He (Stuart) is still not as lively as before his near heatstroke, but we are hopeful. The rehabber, Jackie, is on her way to pick him up.
